Talking shop with a yoga master

I was in Bombay, was born to a family of lawyers. I began my training with BKS Iyengar Yoga at the age of 7 and 22 years, I was the youngest student to earn an Advanced Teacher Training Certificate. As a child I learned the teachings of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother of Pondicherry, which are both my spiritual teacher, along with my wife, Mirra, who teaches Purna Yoga Meditation. I became a Lawyer, certified healer, Ayurvedic therapists, and a body worker. Mirraand I co-direct our studio, Yoga Centers in Bellevue, WA, and I run a food company called Eastern Essence Organic Whole Foods.

I am often asked how the study with Mr. Iyengar, a child was. It was very intense. Iyengar is a very strict teacher, though not as severe now as then! Since I do not just supple born, I had to work very hard to move, he would receive. But he was more than just a teacher to me, he was also a friend. He wouldCome to our house and we did have breakfast and lunch and all that. Often he would stay at home when he came to teach in Bombay, many weekends. So we are on the other side of him, which remained one of the main reasons my family with yoga. Had we know only known him as the powerful teachers, we can not continue because the other side is very beautiful, gentle, sweet, childlike, full of fun and adventure loves. Of course, my asana teaching is based onIyengar method.

I have a very firm belief that yoga is very large. I can not say this is my yoga and yoga is that you, because I believe that yoga is so great that we know all share what we do. I believe that the mix of knowledge is very important, without compromising the essence of what you teach. I can not teach Ashtanga: I can not teach Viniyoga. But I can learn from them and see what is appropriate in my system. So that's what I do, I teachMostly physical yoga in the Iyengar method and the internal yoga meditation on my wife Mirra based teaching and Sri Aurobindo and the Mother's teachings.

A consistent question I receive is how I have time for my own practice with such a schedule. There is simply not an option. Every morning I stand, I mean the basic rituals, and then go and practice. Practice is the first thing I do. If I lack the practice in the morning, I never practice! So it is only possible withoutsay: I always do my practice as the first in the morning. People often ask me how my background in so many professions affects my teaching. It really helps to have experience in various fields. Then when the courses are, you can tap into the different experiences and use language that go down well with various people. For example, one of my greatest loves is poetry, and I'm talking about the classic, beautiful, romantic poetry of Browning, Milton, Keats, Byron.

And if I quote this, it makes a big difference in the class. Likewise, if I use a legal term or an anatomical expression, it resonates with certain people, and it makes the class richer. The best advice I can offer is to start yoga students, a teacher who really knows that can subject that a hard thing, because if you are a new student, you do not know if the teacher knows the subject, to find. This is the main pit and the main pleasure of a young student in> Yoga. It is a time to explore and find someone who really knows her job. And then keep with the teacher for a good five to ten years. And then, of course, is yoga is a lifelong journey of inner revelation.
